International travel
Here's some extra tips for international holidays. For general tips click here.
-
Check immunisations required, as for very young children certain destinations will not be suitable.
-
With the recent restrictions on carry on liquids on international flights, remember to pack any liquids in a clear bag in 100ml bottles. Note babys food, water and milk is exempt from the 100ml limit, see below.
-
The Australian Government has introduced enhanced security measures limiting the amount of liquids, aerosols, and/or gels guests are permitted to take as carry-on baggage to containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. All containers must fit comfortably inside a single one litre transparent re-sealable plastic bag (approx 20cm x 20cm) which must be completely closed. This bag must be presented separately at the security screening point.
-
These restrictions apply to drinks, foods in sauces, shampoos/soaps, creams, lotions, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lip balm and similar substances. Note you may still take on-board items purchased after the security screening point at the airport, including duty free.
-
Exceptions however will be made for guests with medication and quantities of baby food and drinks required for the flight. These items may be subject to additional security checks. Tip - for childrens water bottles, take an empty bottle and fill it up after you pass through the security screening point.
-
Find out if you can buy your babies formula at your destination, if not take a lot more formula than you think you need. You don't know if delays will happen.
-
If travelling overseas or to a remote location, check medical facilities available, whether that is at the hotel, or local hospital or medical centre. You do not want to be looking for this information when your child is sick. Always pack a comprehensive medical kit appropriate to your destination.
-
Leave details of your holiday with a family member or close friend at home and also keep a copy in your luggage/hotel safe. Details include flights, hotel details, insurance policy details, copy of passport and birth certificates and lost/stolen credit card phone numbers. Here's an easy to complete form to hold all of these details.
-
Always ensure your Will and Power of Attorney is up to date and a copy left with family.
-
Check that your mobile phone has coverage.
-
If you will be relying on taxis for transport, check with a taxi company at your destination whether you can order a taxi with a child seat or whether you will need to take yours with you. Also find out what sort of car seat meets standards in the country you are travelling to, for example in the UK no bolt attachment is required.
-
Water and food hygiene is critical to ensure nasty bugs do not ruin your holiday. Always take care, drink bottled water if you are unsure and use common sense with foods you buy.
-
Also use an antibacterial spray or wipes to kill germs in toilets, on table tops, in public transport, anywhere.
-
Get a hotel card containing their contact details in the local language so you can easily give it to a taxi or bus driver to take you back to the hotel or nearest stop. Also get the concierge to write down any other places you will be visiting in the local language so you can easily communicate this to your taxi or bus driver.
-
Money - It is a great idea to have some local currency in your wallet before you arrive for visas (if required), taxi to the hotel and snacks or dinner on the first night. If you are staying in a country where it's difficult to get money, take ample money for the whole trip. You can always change money at the hotel.
