Tips for on the go > For outings > First time mums going out with small babies

Taking your baby out for the first time can be very daunting but here are a few tips.

  • Firstly, go out when it is the right time of day for your baby. If you know they sleep in the pram, go out then. If not, make sure they have their nap at home and then after they are fed, go out.
  • Depending on your routine, you will work out when a good time might be. Most babies have one period in the day when they maybe unsettled and this is sometimes the afternoons. If they like the car or pram, take this as an opportunity.
  • Generally , if a baby has a full tummy, a clean bottom and is not overtired, they are usually pretty happy to go out and go along for the ride with you wherever you are going.
  • Keeping this in mind, you never know how many poos they may do or how long you will be out for (traffic or car troubles) so always take more with you then you think you will need.

For Happy Tummies

  • If bottle feeding, take 2-3 bottles in bottle case (or more if you are out for a long period of time) with pre-prepared water (always boiled and cooled, and at a temperature suitable for drinking). Formula which has already been measured out and put in a formula dispenser. There are also in car bottle warmers available for heating when on the go.
  • If breast feeding, you can take along a breast feeding cover so you can feed anywhere. Most shopping centres have parents rooms and feeding rooms if you need more privacy. In here, you can also change baby and take toddlers to small toilets.
  • For babies that are eating and drinking, take food, snacks and water for them. There are some great containers to keep food cool and in one place when out and about.

For Clean Bottoms

  • Nappy wallet - this keeps everything you need in one place - great to have under the pram or in your nappy bag or handbag
  • Portable change mat - you might have one supplied in your nappy wallet or bag or you can buy a separate one
  • 2-3 nappies (or more if you are going out for a long period of time)
  • Wipes - travel wipes pack are very handy
  • Flushable wipes are handy if you are at a public toilet and there is not toilet paper

TIP: Before each outing, ensure you check your nappy wallet has been fully restocked.

For Sleeping and Cruising in the Pram

  • Dummy or comforter - if your baby loves them, use them
